FROM HEADSHIP TO CONSULTANCY

PREPARE TO MAKE A DIFFERENT TYPE OF CONTRIBUTION TO SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT
A RESIDENTIAL COURSE AT HASSOP HALL COUNTRY HOUSE HOTEL BAKEWELL
22/23 NOVEMBER 2007

Growing headteacher shortages, increased autonomy for schools and A-Day changes to pension rules all mean that there has never been a wider range of alternative employment options available to headteachers – whether you are planning to work until your official retirement age or leave/reduce your working hours some years earlier. Thorough preparation, however, is the key to success. You need to understand the financial implications of the various pension alternatives. You need a clear picture of your personal priorities – how many days a week you want to work and what types of work you’d like to do. You need to know what opportunities are out there – either employed by someone else or developing and marketing your own niche product. You need to consider business start-up options – sole trader, partnership or limited company – and whether or not to register for VAT. Above all, you need to understand how to position yourself in a consultancy market that is experiencing sudden and radical change.
Our residential course – set in a magnificent Georgian Country House Hotel whose food and facilities are legendary amongst Derbyshire headteachers – is directed by Nigel Middleton, a former headteacher who, in the eight years since he left headship, has developed Head Support into a company with a national profile. Bedrooms are available from 4pm on Thursday and the course itself begins with welcome drinks at 6pm – followed by introductions, a session on pensions and dinner in a private room. The Friday programme helps you to develop a clear vision of the type of personal portfolio you are seeking to put together – along with a realistic understanding of the marketplace, of business arrangements and of the preparatory work that you can do now to maximise your chances of success later.
The course fee of £375 plus VAT includes confidential follow-up advice on any pensions issues from an experienced senior LA personnel officer together with accommodation, meals and all drinks provided with them.
